BMIHMS Suzhou Campus is a joint venture of the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School at Torrens University Australia and the Suzhou Tourism and Finance Institute launched in 2004.The program applies the education philosophy of BMIHMS - The Three Pillar Approach: Professional and Personal Growth, Practical Skills Development, and Academic Achievement. After graduating with the BMIHMS Associate Degree of Business (International Hotel and Resort Management), students can enrol in the Bachelor of Business Degree (International Hotel and Resort Management) at BMIHMS in Australia. Graduates of BMIHMS - Suzhou Campus students are highly demand by China's booming hospitality industry.

Suzhou - A city combining modernization and tradition

Suzhou is known as 'Heaven on Earth'- a tourism and cultural city with 2500 years history. It has a thriving economy, a mild weather with four seasons. The city borders by Shanghai in the East, Zhejiang Province in the South, Lake Taihu in the West and the Yangtze River in the North. It takes only 25 minutes by train from Suzhou to Shanghai.

Long history

The long history of Suzhou can be seen from its cityis famous historic structures - old village canals,stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed UNESCO WorldHeritage gardens, but also cultural aspects such as silk, handicrafts,and Kunqu Opera drawing millions of domestic and overseas touristseach year. Marco Poloonce described Suzhou as the 'Venice of the East'.Suzhou's historic Pingjiang Road offers tourist shops,coffee shops and art galleries. Other popular culturalattractions include the Suzhou Museum designed by theworld famous architect I M Pei.


There are a number of religions, including major Christian denominations, as wellas Islam, Buddhism, and Taoism.


Suzhou is one of the largest economies in China, witha GDP of over RMB 1 trillion (approximately USD 195 billion).One-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies operatein Suzhou. This creates internships and many employmentopportunities for our students and graduates.

Favourite student places and activities

Some of Suzhou's main entertainment hubs are locatedaround the scenic Jinji Lake, SIP. TheSuzhou Art and CultureCentre houses contains a theatre IMAX cinema, one of the qualified .Suzhou also has many sports centres and internationalhotels. For nightlifeof the city, there are many restaurants, barsand clubs in Ligongdi area one of the most popularlocations. Students can also visit many traditional Chinese gardenswhich are mainly located at the downtown: Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion's Grove Garden, Lingering Garden etc.Besides its classic gardens, Suzhou is also famous for Kunqu Opera and Pingtan (ballad-singing in Suzhou dialect). You can find silk, handicrafts such as embroidery, fans, traditional Chinese musical instruments, lanterns, furniture, jade carvings, silk tapestry, traditional paintings, wood-block prints, etc, not to mention the crabs from Yangcheng Lake.

BMIHMS History

The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) has been providing hospitality education since 1991. The school was the first of its kind in Australia when it opened and has grown to be recognised as the leading provider of Hospitality Degree Courses. Over 24 years the Leura campus has developed hospitality degree courses where students live and study in a simulated hotel environment. This reflects the famous Swiss hotel school model of teaching and learning.We provide internationally recognised hospitality and business degree courses that are highly respected within the global hotel, restaurant, catering and event management industries.

You can choose to study an Undergraduate business degree in International Hotel and Resort Management, International Event Management or International Restaurant and Catering Management We also provide Masters Degree Programs, which include International Hotel Management and Global Business Management. In 2013, BMIHMS ranked as the number 1 hospitality management school in Asia Pacific and Australia (TNS Survey 2013).

Campus Facilities

The campus offers first class facilities and features the new practical training laboratory, which opened in November 2011. This features an 'in-situ' Hotel Reception with uses the 'Opera' Property Management System, Restaurant and Bar with Micro Point of Sales, Commercial Kitchen, a Wine Exhibition Centre, a Hotel-Style Mock Room and a Research Centre for Hotel Operations.

  • The Practical Building
    The practical building contains with world class facilities thatprovide a simulated hotel environment for students to developtheir skills in Food & Beverage and Front Desk. We are alsorunning our BM Restaurant for our students during the practicalclass weeks. The BM Restaurant is also the most popularvenue for SRC events after class.
  • Research Centre
    The Research Centre more commonly called the "RC" by the students. It is one of the best places for group study, reading a book, collecting secondary data research and also to ask advice from our friendly academic staff on site who are always happy to help.
    Research Centre is located in the middle of our campus, opposite to our Blue Mountains Restaurant. The research centre provides books related to the subjects taught in our program, and also provides access to Mac book computers and a printer in order for the students to print their reports or presentations.The research Centre opens from Monday to Friday from 13.00 to 17.00.
  • Customer Designed Dormitory
    Starting in March 2015, all students have now moved into the new dormitory, designed to provide a more comfortable living environment to all students.Each room is equipped with furniture, air-conditioner, water heater, network sockets, free Wi-Fi and a wash room. In the accommodation area, a public study room, laundries, and a bicycle park area are also available to all students.There are staff members on duty 24 hours a day in the dormitory to provide any help students need, and they work as the first contact point for any housekeeping, maintenance and other enquiries.
  • Games Room
    The Student games room is located within the grounds of the student dormitories. This Building is designed for the students to relax, build lasting friendships and to have fun. The games room is equipped with a home cinema, Bar, Foosball table, pool table, darts, as well as vending machine. The games room is also where staff and students operate and run school and social events from cultural nights, school parties, movie nights and in-house competitions.
  • The Student's Square
    The Student's Square encompasses the dormitory precinct offering a student canteen, cafes, a mini-market, retail shops, hairdressing salon, printing & photocopy services and more.
  • Sports Centre
    Students can use theSports Centre locatedwithin the International Education Park for allkinds of sports and exercises.It is about a 10 minutewalk from Campus.The Sports Centre is athree-level complex forsports and entertainment,and includes an indoorswimming pool, fitnessclub, basketball and badmintoncourts, billiardsand table tennis tables.

Academic Staff

The faculty at Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School China come from a range of professional backgrounds and all have experience in their chosen fields. Many have extensive hospitality industry experience and bring a wealth of insight and knowledge to the units they teach.

  • John T G Nielsen- Campus Director China, Joint Venture Partnership
    Born in London, but raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, Mr. Nielsen has spent nearly 30-years working in Hospitality and Tourism industry and was fortunate as a child to travel extensively with his parents. The joy of travels led Mr. Nielsen into tourism securing his first hospitality job with Scandinavia's largest travel operator and being based for three years in Portugal.

    From Portugal, the journey led to three-years in Switzerland at a Swiss Hotel Management School completing a classic Swiss Hotel education with stints in chic village of Gstaad in the Swiss alps, London, Lisbon and Copenhagen, followed by almost eight years in Asia, including leading cities such as: Seoul, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur working for global luxury brands such as Mandarin Oriental & Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and as opening F & B Director of the Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur.

    The lure of yet another opening adventure in Melbourne, Australia was Mr. Nielsen's opportunity to create a home for his family, who now call Melbourne home. During the past 20-years, Mr. Nielsen has helped established a number of businesses including cafe's, a restaurant and the unique concept of Liquid Assets; a wine storage and wine club business. In addition, he returned to Hyatt hotels helping establish new concepts and was the General Manager of a luxury catering business and worked for the PGA Australia in Golf Management.

    During his time in senior management Mr. Nielsen often took a keen interest in education and jumped at the opportunity to join the then owned Laureate Hospitality College, Les Roches Shanghai in 2014 as the Practical Program Manager and later Head of Enrollment until June 2017 when joining Blue Mountains China in Suzhou.

    Mr. Nielsen say's "I found my Why helping young students on their journey, using the lessons I have learned throughout my career".

    Adding on to the Swiss Hotel School education, Mr. Nielsen holds a Master Degree in Business from Charles Sturt University in Australia, a CHE Diploma (Certified Hospitality Educator) from the American Motel & Lodging Association and a Diploma in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education from Laureate Online Universities.

    Mr. Nielsen further explains "China offers many wonderful opportunities and experiences and the chance to help young students enter an amazing growth industry in China".

  • Antonio Graceffo-Program Director
    PhD, China-MBA is the author of seven books about China and Southeast Asia. He worked as a teacher and lecturer for approximately 18 years, the last five of which were spent at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Sydney Institute of Language and Commerce (SILC), Shanghai University, where he taught business research writing, introduction ton business, and critical thinking for business. Antonio holds a PhD from Shanghai University of Sport, where he wrote his dissertation, in Chinese. In addition, Antonio received his China-MBA, from Shanghai Jiaotong University, and is currently completing a second PhD at School of Economics Shanghai University, specializing in China outbound investment and Trump-China Trade. Previously, he completed graduate diploma in teaching TESOL from Trinity College, University of London, graduate diploma in business from Heriot Wat University, Edinburgh. As an economist, Antonio specializes in China-Trump trade relations and China's Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in relation to Asian. He is a frequent contributor to the American Foreign Policy Journal and the Shanghai Institute of American Research, a Chinese government think tank publication.
  • Jose Manuel Iracheta Gonzalez-Food & Beverage Lecturer and Trainer
    Originally from Mexico city, working for in the must important Banquets and restaurant company at that time (Ambrosia),   after I complete my studies I move to Cancun at the caribbean side of Mexico working in 5  Stars Hotel (Banyan Tree), then having a oportunity to move to United Arab Emirates working for 5 Stars Hotel (St Regis from Starwood Hotels) then I was part of a 5 Stars Airline (ETIHAD Airways) moving then to work for a luxury cruise line (SEABOURN), always completing my tasks with responsibility as an expert in the industry and sharing my experience in a large number of countries.   
  • Ravi Nashier- Lecturer
    Ravi Nashier is currently serving as a Room Division Lecturer and Trainer at the Blue Mountain International Hotel Management School, China. He is also an Alumnus from Blue Mountain School, Australia, and holds a Bachelor of Business degree in Hotel and Resort management. Ravi Nashier is currently studying online Master of Science in Management from Liverpool University, U.K.

    Ravi Nashier has worked on his last job as a Revenue Manager at the Fairmont Resort, Australia where he gained extensive knowledge of hotel business. Mr. Ravi has worked in various departments of hotel in the past such as Front Office, F&B mainly in the restaurants, which has helped him to develop his communication, leadership and problem solving skills.

  • Heidi Johanna Tanhuva- Lecturer
    Heidi comes originally from Finland and is part of the Blue Mountains Suzhou Training Team.

    Heidi has a Master's Degree in Economics & Business Administration majoring in International Business and she has been living & working abroad for more than 10 years now. Heidi's hospitality industry background consists of working onboard cruise ships for Norwegian Cruise Line in different parts of the world and working in the aviation industry for Etihad Airways. Heidi has also been working in the education field as a lecturer and trainer in Vietnam and China concentrating on topics in international business, hospitality & tourism. She also holds an international TEFL & TESOL training certificate. 

    Heidi's passion is travelling and so far she has visited more than 60 different countries. She is very happy sharing her knowledge about intercultural communication and working in many multicultural teams around the world.

  • Carlos da Silva- Lecturer

    I have graduated BMIHMS in September of 2016, my professional experience started in Macau as a F&B Trainee in the Sofitel at Ponte 16 Macau focused mainly in fine dining. Opportinities then took me to Rendezvous Hotel Sydney as a Night Auditor and most recently to the Grand Coloane Macau as a Management Trainee. I have a passion for hotel management and making people smile and I feel it is important to pass that onto students. I have had diverse exposure to the hotel industry in a short time and I believe it has given me the tools I need to prepare students for the future.
