BMIHMS Suzhou Campus is a joint venture of the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School at Torrens University Australia and the Suzhou Tourism and Finance Institute launched in 2004.The program applies the education philosophy of BMIHMS - The Three Pillar Approach: Professional and Personal Growth, Practical Skills Development, and Academic Achievement. After graduating with the BMIHMS Associate Degree of Business (International Hotel and Resort Management), students can enrol in the Bachelor of Business Degree (International Hotel and Resort Management) at BMIHMS in Australia. Suzhou is known as 'Heaven on Earth'- a tourism and cultural city with 2500 years history. It has a thriving economy, a mild weather with four seasons. The city borders by Shanghai in the East, Zhejiang Province in the South, Lake Taihu in the West and the Yangtze River in the North. It takes only 25 minutes by train from Suzhou to Shanghai.

Long history

The long history of Suzhou can be seen from its cityis famous historic structures - old village canals,stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed UNESCO WorldHeritage gardens, but also cultural aspects such as silk, handicrafts,and Kunqu Opera drawing millions of domestic and overseas touristseach year. Marco Poloonce described Suzhou as the 'Venice of the East'.Suzhou's historic Pingjiang Road offers tourist shops,coffee shops and art galleries. Other popular culturalattractions include the Suzhou Museum designed by theworld famous architect I M Pei.


There are a number of religions, including major Christian denominations, as wellas Islam, Buddhism, and Taoism.

Some of Suzhou's main entertainment hubs are locatedaround the scenic Jinji Lake, SIP. TheSuzhou Art and CultureCentre houses contains a theatre IMAX cinema, one of the qualified .Suzhou also has many sports centres and internationalhotels. For nightlifeof the city, there are many restaurants, barsand clubs in Ligongdi area one of the most popularlocations. Students can also visit many traditional Chinese gardenswhich are mainly located at the downtown: Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion's Grove Garden, Lingering Garden etc.Besides its classic gardens, Suzhou is also famous for Kunqu Opera and Pingtan (ballad-singing in Suzhou dialect). You can find silk, handicrafts such as embroidery, fans, traditional Chinese musical instruments, lanterns, furniture, jade carvings, silk tapestry, traditional paintings, wood-block prints, etc, not to mention the crabs from Yangcheng Lake.

BMIHMS History

The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) has been providing hospitality education since 1991. The school was the first of its kind in Australia when it opened and has grown to be recognised as the leading provider of Hospitality Degree Courses. Over 24 years the Leura campus has developed hospitality degree courses where students live and study in a simulated hotel environment. This reflects the famous Swiss hotel school model of teaching and learning.We provide internationally recognised hospitality and business degree courses that are highly respected within the global hotel, restaurant, catering and event management industries.

You can choose to study an Undergraduate business degree in International Hotel and Resort Management, International Event Management or International Restaurant and Catering Management We also provide Masters Degree Programs, which include International Hotel Management and Global Business Management. Campus Facilities

The campus offers first class facilities and features the new practical training laboratory, which opened in November 2011. This features an 'in-situ' Hotel Reception with uses the 'Opera' Property Management System, Restaurant and Bar with Micro Point of Sales, Commercial Kitchen, a Wine Exhibition Centre, a Hotel-Style Mock Room and a Research Centre for Hotel Operations.

  • The Practical Building
    The practical building contains with world class facilities thatprovide a simulated hotel environment for students to developtheir skills in Food & Beverage and Front Desk. We are alsorunning our BM Restaurant for our students during the practicalclass weeks. The BM Restaurant is also the most popularvenue for SRC events after class.
  • Research Centre
    The Research Centre more commonly called the "RC" by the students. It is one of the best places for group study, reading a book, collecting secondary data research and also to ask advice from our friendly academic staff on site who are always happy to help.
    Research Centre is located in the middle of our campus, opposite to our Blue Mountains Restaurant. The research centre provides books related to the subjects taught in our program, and also provides access to Mac book computers and a printer in order for the students to print their reports or presentations.The research Centre opens from Monday to Friday from 13.00 to 17.00.
  • Customer Designed Dormitory
    Starting in March 2015, all students have now moved into the new dormitory, designed to provide a more comfortable living environment to all students.Each room is equipped with furniture, air-conditioner, water heater, network sockets, free Wi-Fi and a wash room. In the accommodation area, a public study room, laundries, and a bicycle park area are also available to all students.There are staff members on duty 24 hours a day in the dormitory to provide any help students need, and they work as the first contact point for any housekeeping, maintenance and other enquiries.
  • Games Room
    The Student games room is located within the grounds of the student dormitories. This Building is designed for the students to relax, build lasting friendships and to have fun. The games room is equipped with a home cinema, Bar, Foosball table, pool table, darts, as well as vending machine. The games room is also where staff and students operate and run school and social events from cultural nights, school parties, movie nights and in-house competitions.
  • The Student's Square
    The Student's Square encompasses the dormitory precinct offering a student canteen, cafes, a mini-market, retail shops, hairdressing salon, printing & photocopy services and more.
  • Sports Centre
    Students can use theSports Centre locatedwithin the International Education Park for allkinds of sports and exercises.It is about a 10 minutewalk from Campus.The Sports Centre is athree-level complex forsports and entertainment,and includes an indoorswimming pool, fitnessclub, basketball and badmintoncourts, billiardsand table tennis tables.

  • Fergus MacDougall- Fergus MacDougall Campus Director Suzhou, Director Joint Venture Partnership
    MacDougall has a rich history in hospitality,, hotel management, hotel management education and luxury fashion brand operations. He is passionately committed to the core value of great customer service and creating insightful change in the industry.

    MacDougall graduated with an undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney, Australia with majors in mandarin (standard Chinese) and Sociology. He has further studies in international business and ancient & modern Chinese history. MacDougall graduated further intensive Chinese language studies at Shanghai's prestigious Fudan University.

    MacDougall has fulfilled the role of Hotel General Manager at significant projects in Sydney, Hong Kong and Shanghai including lifestyle projects for Dolce & Gabbana and Ermenegildo Zegna and the boutique hotel properties Morgan's of Sydney, Cachet Boutique and URBN Boutique Hotel in Shanghai.

    MacDougall's China experience also includes a role for Seven Media Australia, during the 2008 Beijing Olympic games, numerous consulting and management projects and a term as head of training for 'Swisstar Communications' in Shanghai working with the JC Mandarin, JW Marriott, Raddisson New World, Raddison Xing Guo hotels and others on training, systems development and auditing. MacDougall is fluent in mandarin (standard Chinese).

    MacDougalls'strategic thinking and overall financial acumen has given him a proven record of building successful & sustainable businesses, hotels and cross border partnerships. It is this broad experience and passion for the industry that he brings to Blue Mountains Suzhou Campus, building on the schools history of creating great outcomes for students and the school community at large. With his business & operational background, Chinese language skills & love of history and culture, his obsession with personal service and a dedication to the finer points of the luxury travel experience, MacDougall is well placed as a market leader in the Asia Pacific travel & hospitality education field.

  • Jeffrey Bartlett- Jeffrey Bartlett, Program Director
    Program Director Jeffrey Bartlett is a veteran of the hospitality industry with 40 years experience. As hospitality manager and an award-winning hospitality trainer, he holds many academic and vocational qualifications in Hospitality Management and Education. He has taught Hospitality Management extensively both in Australia and China for many years. In 2012, Jeffrey was inducted into the Whitsunday Tourism Training Authority Hall of Fame, for Excellence in Tourism Education and Training. He also was awarded the prestigious Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award in 2012 for his dedication to quality training.

    A qualified chef and restaurateur, Jeffrey has extensive holistic hospitality skills, having successfully managed in resorts, hotels and government institutions throughout Australia.

    As well as a hospitality educator, Jeff is an experienced English teacher. Jeffrey is currently lecturing in English, using his wealth of experience to increase the hospitality skills and business English skills of students and hotel employees throughout China.

  • Ravi Nashier, Room Division Lecturer/Instructor
    Ravi Nashier is currently serving as a Room Division Lecturer and Trainer at the Blue Mountain International Hotel Management School, China. He is also an Alumnus from Blue Mountain School, Australia, and holds a Bachelor of Business degree in Hotel and Resort management. Ravi Nashier is currently studying online Master of Science in Management from Liverpool University, U.K.

    Ravi Nashier has worked on his last job as a Revenue Manager at the Fairmont Resort, Australia where he gained extensive knowledge of hotel business. Mr. Ravi has worked in various departments of hotel in the past such as Front Office, F&B mainly in the restaurants, which has helped him to develop his communication, leadership and problem solving skills.

  • Jose Manuel Iracheta Gonzalez, Food & Beverage Lecturer /Trainer
    Originally from Mexico city, working for in the must important Banquets and restaurant company at that time (Ambrosia), after I complete my studies I move to Cancun at the caribbean side of Mexico working in 5 Stars Hotel (Banyan Tree), then having a oportunity to move to United Arab Emirates working for 5 Stars Hotel (St Regis from Starwood Hotels) then I was part of a 5 Stars Airline (ETIHAD Airways) moving then to work for a luxury cruise line (SEABOURN), always completing my tasks with responsibility as an expert in the industry and sharing my experience in a large number of countries.

  • Amanda Drummond- Food & Beverage Lecturer /Trainer
    Personal experience specialist who is Innovative and enthusiastic, with a passion for people, I have a vibrant career of 24 years in the hospitality sector. This career has incorporated silver service establishments to café style exposure, comprising of hotels, independent restaurants, gastro pubs, franchises and unique style coffee roasting café's. Including 16 years of which were spent in my own business as a multi site café developer, successfully establishing and developing commercially viable café style hospitality businesses. In more recent times aligning with organizations in a capacity to professionally develop and lead employees to improve service standards.

    I would like the opportunity to use my skills to help others achieve consistent success. Bringing a confident, commercial approach to my roles, drawing from my experience as a successful business owner, and a proven leader in past employment roles. I am now seeking a position with a strong customer centered, competitive and motivated organisation. Demonstrating strong communication and professional skills, along with my ability to take ownership and achieve objectives will add significant value to my employer.

  • Dr. Richard Bowen- Lecturer
    Dr Richard Bowen is currently Executive Dean to an Australian Publically Listed Company (ASX: SIT), is a Board member at Site Institute and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. He is on indefinite leave from these responsibilities to work with the STFI-BM JV program in Suzhou.

    Recently, though the support of Australia's peak body for Education and Training, TAFE Directors Australia - Dr Bowen was appointed as the nationally endorsed Senior Advisor to Taipei, where, under bilateral agreement, he advised on the development of Taiwan's national TVET regulatory framework and supported transnational cooperation through ex-officio representation on the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (Australian Office) hosted, Australian - Taiwan joint Ministry committee. This culminated in his provision of directional policy advice on the new bilateral agreement between the two jurisdictions and being appointed as co-keynote speaker at APEC, Taichung following the formal signing ceremony between the representatives to the Heads of State.

    Prior to this, Dr Bowen was Member of the Board of Studies at the Queensland government Statutory Authority and largest provider of tertiary education in the State (>140 000 students), TAFE Queensland (Brisbane) and Queensland State Representative to the Australian National Heads of Business Studies. During his tenure at TAFE Queensland, Dr Bowen held positions as Teacher, Lecturer, Deputy Head of School, School Director, Faculty Director and finally, Director of Teaching and Learning to Shanghai to undertake audit of TAFE's high risk off shore programs and to broker new partnerships. According to independently conducted Tribal Benchmarking across selected Australian, New Zealand and United Kingdom based VET enterprises , Dr Bowen's accomplishments as the Director of TAFE Queensland's SouthBank Business School, where he led his team to deliver - 30% above budgeted revenue, 12% above budgeted Gross Margin, a 58% to 23% reliance shift on government funding and a three-fold growth in B2B commercial revenue - indisputably established him as a proven industry leader in the tertiary education and training sector

    In other industries, Dr Bowen built one of South Africa's largest privately owned direct marketing organisations having established some 1,200 individual business contracts, with operations in five countries. He also has a PhD specializing in the development of metal based drugs for use in Chemotherapy, is an MBA Medallist, holds 11 patents (provisional applications, country, international) and has > 180 publications in international peer reviewed journals, conference proceedings and industry publications. For his contributions to academia, Dr Bowen was bestowed as Honorary Professorial Research Associate at WITS University, Extraordinary Lecturer at University of Pretoria, visiting Prof Dr at Leiden University and visiting Principal Investigator at Heidelberg University, while holding Claude Harris Leon Foundation, National Research Foundation and URC Fellowships.

    In education and training, Dr Bowen, Chaired the then peak industry body, the Queensland Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Industry Forum's (now MediQ) Skills Working Group to drive sectoral productivity solutions. For his work, where he wrote the first accredited post graduate level VET qualifications in Applied Biotechnology, conceived and implemented Australia's first post graduate level VET cadetships in biotechnology and pioneered higher education - VET 'reverse articulation' pathways for the sector, Dr Bowen was bestowed with a Queensland State Government departmental award for Innovation in Training.

    Prior to his current roles in education and training, Dr Bowen held leadership positions as Head of the AngloGold, Harmony Gold, Goldfields joint venture, AuTEK Bio, Chief Scientist at Mintek, Head of Strategic Initiatives at BioPAD (now Technology Innovation Agency) and National Chair for establishment and reform of South Africa's specialist Bio - industry.

    Dr Bowen enjoys working internationally, with extensive international professional networks in Geneva, Heidelberg, Leiden, Edinburgh, Brussels, Irvine, Johannesburg, Abuja, China and Taiwan through working with these jurisdictions.  Dr Bowen is a passionate advocate for training & firmly believes that the application of 'best practice' skills is the critical currency of workforce productivity.

  • Mikhal Parascan, Lecturer
    Mikhail is an avid HR specialist with history in teaching psychology and business communication. Mikhail is a master degree graduate of Far Eastern State University, Vladivostok, Russia in Organization Management & Human Resources. Mikhail has further postgraduate studies in Hotel Management from Les Roches Jin Jiang International Hotel Management College, Shanghai, China, graduating with a Post Graduate Diploma.

    Mikhail has professional experience across numerous five star hotel properties including Hilton, Zhuzhou, China, and Hotel Eclat, Beijing. Has worked extensively across the broader travel market in Russia and excelled in his role at Nanjing Tech University, International Hospitality Culture College as Human Resources lecturer and a head of HR Department of the IHD Teaching Hotel, Nanjing.

    Mikhail's passion for world history, international affairs, educational innovation, business and socio- psychology, classical art, traveling and exploring different cultures and traditions gives him a broad & dynamic approach to all he achieves.
